What is a water type extinguisher used for?

What is a water type fire extinguishers used for. Water extinguishers are used on solids such as wood, paper, fabrics and other A class fire risks. The water cools the fire and extinguishes it. It penetrates into burning fabrics and can extinguish pockets of fire even deep in the core of the fire.

What is the best use water as a fire extinguisher?

Water jet extinguishers work by spraying a jet of water at the burning materials, cooling them and preventing re-ignition. They should not be used on live electrical equipment.
Water spray extinguishers use a very fine spray of water droplets, each droplet is surrounded by air which is non-conductive. Most water spray fire extinguishers carry a 35 kV dielectric test approval which means they have been tested on a 35,000 Volt electrical source at one meter.

Water extinguishers with additives are water extinguishers with foaming chemicals added. The water loses its natural surface tension meaning that it can soak into the burning materials more effectively. Adding the chemicals to the water means that a smaller extinguisher can produce the same fire rating as a larger, water only, extinguisher.

How does a water type fire extinguisher work?

Water type fire extinguishers are designed differently than other fire extinguisher types.A water fire extinguisher is designed to expel water to cool down or extinguish the fire. When the tamper seal is broken, the safety pin pulled out, and the lever squeezed, it forces a pointed rod within the valve assembly downward to puncture a canister containing high-pressure gas.

The gas is released into the cylindrical tank, forcing the water downward. The water is then channeled under pressure into a tube that runs up the inside of the fire extinguisher tank to the valve assembly and out the hose. The pressure from the gas forces the water out of the fire extinguisher with enough propulsion to extinguish the fire from a safety distance of 4-6 feet.
